February 4th, 2013
The event, called “T&T OK!! Chodeh Chit Chat”1, was held on 31st January, 2013. It was a TV conference event between Trinidad and Tobago and the Okinawa prefecture in Japan. It aims to exchange knowledge and experiences in recycling between the students in two islands; Trinidad and Okinawa, an island prefecture of Japan. From Trinidad and Tobago, Students from the Fatima College and the Bishop Anstey High School participated in this event. The event was held in cooperation with Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Public Administration, and Greenlight Network (NGO).
The event started with a short movie greeting by His Excellency Yoshimasa Tezuka, Ambassador of Japan to Trinidad and Tobago. In his message, he said that “Even though both islands are far apart, I am very glad that students from such similar islands can meet by having this TV conference today. I sincerely hope this opportunity can strengthen relations between Okinawa and Trinidad and Tobago”.
Students from both sides explained the overview of their own islands and the situation of solid waste management and recycle activities in their own island. Students then played a musical instrument which was made by reused materials. From Trinidad, two students played Okinawa’s popular song with the steel pan , the steel pan is originally made by used oil drum.
JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) has conducted a training course, “Sustainable Solid Waste Management in the CARICOM Countries” since 2009. This training course welcomes solid waste management officials from the CARICOM countries to introduce the experience of the people in Okinawa regarding collaboration among public, civil and private sectors in recycling activities. The Government of Trinidad and Tobago has sent two officials to this training, who have had outstanding performances since their returning.
The Government of Japan welcomes further opportunities to work with the Government and the people of the Republic of Trinidad, all with a view to strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual understanding which exist between the two countries.
Attached are pictures of the ceremony which may be resized and distributed.
