PRESS RELEASE: Japanese Government assists with the Procurement and the Transportation of ambulances from Japan to St. Lucia

March 4, 2013

The signing ceremony for the Grant Assistance for the Grass-roots Human Security Project (GGP) entitled “The Project for the Procurement of Ambulances for St. Lucia” took place at 11:00 a.m. on February 26, 2013, at Gros Islet Fire Station, Gros Islet, St. Lucia.

The St. Lucia Fire and Emergency Services will receive a grant of up to US$69,588 from the Government of Japan which will be used for the basic conditioning and equipping of four (4) pre-owned ambulances, as well as covering the cost of transporting them from Japan to St. Lucia. Three (3) ambulances are donated by the Tokyo Fire Station and one (1) by the Sakura City/Yachimata City Shisuicho Fire Corporation (map attached). Through this project, the St. Lucia Fire and Emergency Services will be able to improve its service efficiency and effectiveness.

His Excellency Yoshimasa Tezuka, Ambassador of Japan to St. Lucia, and Mr. Leslie Fontenelle, Chief Fire Officer, were in attendance for the ceremony. Senator the Honorable Victor Philip La Corbiniere, Minister of Legal Affairs, Home Affairs and National Security, also attended the ceremony.

In his speech, Ambassador Tezuka stated that the Japanese local government that donated the ambulances to St. Lucia supports the objectives of the GGP, and had decided to donate their vehicles as their contribution to the efforts being made to help save lives in other countries. He believes that the officers of the St. Lucia Fire and Emergency Service will use these ambulances with the same commitment to saving lives as their Japanese counterparts.

The Government of Japan welcomes further opportunities to work with the Government and the people of St. Lucia, all with a view to strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual understanding which exist between the two countries.
