PRESS RELEASE
The handing-over ceremony for the Grant Assistance for the Grass-roots Human Security Project (GGP) entitled “The Project for Promotion of Recycling in Antigua” took place at 1:30 p.m. on November 7, 2012 at the Antigua and Barbuda Waste Recycling Cooperation’s (ABWREC) Recycling Plant, St. John’s, Antigua. The ABWREC received a Grant of US$77,176 from the Government of Japan for the procurement of equipment including conveyors and control panel, sorting platform, recycling skips and bins.
The ceremony was attended by the Honorable Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda; Mr. Akihiko Sanada, Second Secretary, Embassy of Japan, and Mr. Mario Bento, Chairman of ABWREC.
In his speech, Mr. Sanada highlighted that this was a significant occasion as this was the first ever project of the GGP in Antigua and Japan was truly appreciative of the cooperation from the Government of Antigua and Barbuda for all its efforts in their assistance of making this project a realization. He is positive that this project will open a new chapter in the continued relations between the two countries. With the completion of this project, ABWREC’s facility is now better more equipped and able to process recycling materials more effectively and efficiently. In addition, with the use of new collection bins, ABWREC will be able to expand its collection of recyclable waste to more areas in Antigua.
The Government of Japan welcomes further opportunities to work with the Government and the people of Antigua and Barbuda, all with a view to strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual understanding which exist between the two countries.
