Between the mainland of Honshu and the island of Shikoku in the Seto Inland Sea there’s a small island called Okunoshima also known as Bunny Island, Rabbit Island, or Usagi Jima. The island is a part of Hiroshima Prefecture but can be accessed from both Hiroshima and Shikoku via ferry.

And they mean Rabbit Island! There are thousands and thousands of wild rabbits which live and populate the island. Even from the ferry the rabbits can be seen amongst the trees and even along the beach.

The island itself is small enough that you can walk around the entire thing. There are trails and restaurants along the way. And rabbits! Rabbits in the park, rabbits on the beach, rabbits in the forests. Big rabbits, baby rabbits, multicoloured rabbits! Just all rabbits!

I recommend a half day trip to this island. There are special edition omiyage in the shops for collectors and besides the ferry fee, it’s totally free. Rabbit food is available and some people pet them, but I personally wasn’t brave enough.
