JET Programme Series: Fukuoka is my home away from home - Amanda Goberdhan
As a child, coming to Japan was my dream. At the age of six, I’d hungrily devour Japanese documentaries that aired on our local T.V channels. I am currently a proud JET and happy resident of Japan’s ‘Gateway to Asia’; one of the driving forces of the industrial revolution. Fukuoka-Ken is a beautiful juxtaposition of nature and urban life, boasting ancient temples and shrines, energetic festivals, islands, entertainment and modern shopping malls.

From stunning Nanzoin Temple in Sasaguri to the picturesque beaches of Ashiya, I am having a blast. One of my favourite recollections is volunteering for Kyushu Rainbow Pride Event in Fukuoka City where I assisted with activities and made memories to last a lifetime. I viewed Japan’s second largest fireworks display during the Kanmon Straits Fireworks Display in magnificent Mojiko. Approximately 15,000 fireworks are set off annually in August.

I attended an international party hosted by my Japanese friend, an international socialite in my hometown. I made many acquaintances from different countries and learned a traditional Japanese dance, whilst donning Happi, the traditional Japanese jacket worn at festivals. I have also been asked to prepare local Trinbagonian cuisine for the Mayor and his wife in a few months’ time. (I’ll keep you posted on this).

I have wonderful co-workers, a fantastic supervisor, Japanese moms and dads, kind neighbors, Japanese friends and fellow JETS who have assisted me. My students fuel my passion for teaching; I am constantly greeted with chants of ‘I love Amanda!’ on a daily basis.

Living in japan is my dream come true. I cannot wait to create more memories and adventures!

I would like to send special thanks to the Embassy of Japan in Trinidad and Tobago and Ambassador Hirayama for letting me fulfil my dream of living and working in this beautiful country.

Sayonara!
