JET Programme Series: Summer Vacation Road Trip – Shevon Williams

This year, since we could not do much travelling, a couple friends and I decided to go on a short road trip. Our first stop was the Katoda sunflower field in Yamaga city, Kumamoto prefecture. Flowers are a really big deal in Japan so it was nice to see an entire field of beautiful sunflowers.
Next we went to the Yamaga city hanging lantern museum. The lanterns were all hand made from paper and the craftsmanship was pretty impressive. The legend behind the origin of the Yamaga lanterns states that when Emperor Keiko, the twelfth emperor of Japan, came to Kyushu, he travelled up the Kikuchi River however heavy fog engulfed him and his entourage and the villagers of Yamaga carried torches to guide them to safety.
We also went to the Nadagu shrine in Kitsuki city. This shrine is located next to the beach which was quite an interesting / beautiful sight.
