Fukuoka, whilst it is famous for its’ vast shopping malls, booming nightlife, energetic festivals and amazing, shrines drenched in rich Japanese history, also boasts ethereal hiking spots.

A great challenge for your legs is Mt. Hikosan. Although this hike takes approximately three to four hours to the top, it is well worth it. Along the route, there is a dazzling display of bucolic shrines, life like statues of Gods and craggy, winding stairs that hug the curves of the mountain. Splashes of vivid greens, pinks and yellows from lush, flourishing flora harmoniously blend and paint a truly exquisite landscape as Spring approaches.

The crisp, pristine air is often interrupted by the shrill horns and prayers of Shugendo Buddhists. Mt Hikosan is their sacred center for training. Even though you aren’t allowed to photograph them during their rituals, you are permitted to observe.

I can definitely say Mt. Hikosan is my favorite. Words are not enough to illustrate the wondrous beauty of this revered habitat, so I’ll leave you some pictures to take in.

A special thanks once more to the Embassy of Japan in Trinidad and Tobago and Ambassador Hirayama for letting me live and fulfil my dream of living and working in this beautiful country.
