I was placed in Minamuionuma City, Niigata which is known for some of the best rice in all of Japan.  The outstanding quality of rice is due to the amazing snow fall we receive each year. Nicknamed ‘Snow Country’, we boast of some of the top winter sport facilities in Japan with many tourist and locals visiting our city to enjoy the fluffy cloud like snow.

Once the snow melts it produces the cleanest natural water supply necessary to produce this top tier quality of rice. With the best rice, also comes the best Sake.

I was asked to appear in a promotional video project that sought to promote our city as a major tourist destination. The project was filmed in Minamiuonuma City & Uonuma City and features myself, and 2 other JET Programme participants currently working in this area.  The title “SAKE-TION” is a term coined by the video director to capture the idea of a Japanese sake-themed vacation (“sake” + “vacation”).

The SAKE-TION project was organized by Minamiuonuma City to promote awareness of the prosperous local Japanese sake industry and highlight the appeals of traveling to the Snow Country region of Japan. The winter climate, fertile landscape, and innate sense of patience and determination that locals possess has helped advance sake making techniques used throughout the Hokuriku area and yielded numerous iconic sake brands.

There are many unique experiences that come with exploring the world of sake such as touring local breweries, drinking with friends and locals too, and tasting various local cuisines that pair perfectly with freshly brewed Japanese sake.

We hope this video can excite many people both in Japan and around the world about the amazing traditions and techniques that exist in the sake breweries of Japan’s Snow Country and inspire people traveling to this area to take advantage of many different sake-themed activities!

Being a part of this video was a once in a lifetime experience, I got to see firsthand how the sake was made, visit gorgeous sites in my city and taste delicious food. I truly hope you can visit my city and enjoy your very own SAKE-TION.
