Jet Programme Series: And the Adventure Begins - Nalini Nanan

Hello, my name is Nalini Nanan, I am 31 years old. I was born and raised in the quiet country side of Borde Narve Village, Princes Town. Coming from a humble, impoverished family, I strived to obtain a good education and with the support and guidance of my parents and siblings I was able to achieve my CXC subjects at Barrackpore Secondary School and six years later a Bachelor of Science, double major in Biology from the University of the West Indies.
I remember the days sitting and watching the stars wondering, what is my destiny in life? Where am I going to be a few years from now? I didn’t have the answer just yet, but I knew it would be something great because of my commitment and eagerness to achieve a better life. I worked hard in my weekly 9-hour job and dreamed of one day getting accepted into a prestige company. I would sit in my car on lunch times and cry, asking God for a way out. Years passed by and nothing came, after sending hundreds of applications, nothing, no calls or interviews. I was broken inside, but still displayed a happy character, because I appreciated the little salary that kept me surviving day by day.
Several years later in 2019, while scrolling through Facebook, I saw one of my friend posting beautiful pictures of him in Japan, he was selected as an Assistant Language Teacher and seemingly so happy. I contacted him and he encouraged me to try it out as well. I agreed, but didn’t believe that I would be accepted because I know it was a very competitive field. Eventually I applied, went into prayer and ask God to bless me with this opportunity that I really wanted, as I love adventure and Japan is all about adventures. After my interview, I was acknowledged as a successful candidate. My eyes were filled with tears, my prayers were answered. I accepted the opportunity and gave all my efforts to completing the multiple tasks assigned to me. This was a dream come through and from that day I believed, this was my destiny.
I was lucky to be placed in Kagoshima Prefecture, located at the South-Western tip of the island of Kyushu, in the city of Ibusuki as an ALT. I am very excited to witness the view of Sakurajima, an active volcano that faces Kinko Bay. I am also excited to experience the Sand Musi Onsen in Ibusuki, indulge in the open air tamate bako onsen, visit the island of Chiringashima and taste the variety of food and delicacies. It would be an honor experiencing the Japanese culture and beautiful nature they preserve so well. Yes, it’s going to be a great adventure.
This program will definitely benefit my career, for it will enhance my teaching skills and as I learn the Japanese language I would one day like to become a teacher of the Japanese culture in Trinidad.
In appreciation for this achievement, I would firstly like to thank God for granting me this opportunity of a lifetime, my boyfriend who stuck by my side through it all, my family and friends for the support, love and assistance they showed. I would also like to thank the staff at the local Japanese Embassy, NTA travel agency, CLAIR and my colleagues at the Board of Education in Kagoshima and Supervisor for their patience, guidance and support throughout this process and my trip to Japan. Thank you very much.
