JET Programme Series: Journey as a Foreign Language Learner - Krizia Fabien
My name is Krizia Fabien, I am 26 years old and I am from South Trinidad. I majored in Spanish with a minor in music at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine. I also had the opportunity to study abroad at The University of Massachusetts, Boston, USA.

I experienced teaching English in Colombia by participating in volunteer teaching, ALT programmes and English teaching in language schools located in my town. I really enjoy travelling and I was inspired to apply for the JET Programme as it is a great opportunity to explore English teaching in a new environment, with exposure to a new language and culture. I was placed in Inagi City, located in the Tokyo prefecture, and I look forward to learning the Japanese language and lifestyle. I spent my recent years making use of every opportunity to become fully immersed in Spanish language learning so I have been shifting my focus to Japanese in order continue my journey as a foreign language learner.

I am very excited to meet new people and visit new places, especially the temples and shrines around Japan. While Tokyo has its big city life, there are also beautiful nature spots that I plan to visit. There are also steelpan communities within Japan and I hope to see some of their performances as I've been a member of a south based steelband for over 12 years.

I am surely interested in learning about the Japanese Education System so I intend on using some of my previous experiences in foreign language learning and teaching to make English more fun and interesting in the classroom.

I was very dedicated to my last job position which was in the humanitarian field and the JET Programme will benefit my career in a number of ways. It gives me the opportunity to continue understanding, learning and interacting with people who come from different backgrounds and lifestyles. This gives me the chance to broaden my perspective, see things differently, and share my own culture while appreciating other cultures and places.

Thanks to my family and friends for encouraging me to take on this new challenge. A special thank you to the Embassy of Japan for selecting me as a candidate for the JET Programme. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity and I appreciate all of the support received from everyone at the Embassy.
