JET Programme Series: Induction into the JET Family - Kelly Cain

My name is Kelly Cain. I am 29 years old and I am from Sangre Grande in Trinidad. I obtained my undergraduate degree in International Relations with a minor in Political Science and a masters in Global Studies from the University of the West Indies.
I applied to the JET Programme because Japanese culture and the traditional side of Japan began my interest in International Relations. It was the biggest driving force behind my areas of study. However as time went on, life moved on and my life became somewhat stagnant. At the end of 2017 I had a life altering accident which put everything into perspective for me and I gained a renewed vigor for my dreams and aspirations. I made a decision to go back to the beginning. Seeing as Japan and its rich history started this journey for me, it was only right that it continued my journey with me. Although I am still learning how to read, write and speak Japanese, I believe I can do more. I like learning and teaching others what I have learnt, and having a strong connection to Japan, I would like to learn more about the country.
I was placed in Yawatahama-shi in Ehime Prefecture. I am excited about teaching in Japan because I believe that through this programme I would in turn learn a lot and would gain a more holistic view of another’s culture and way of life. What better way to learn about a country than through its own people’s eyes. I also hope that this experience broadens the minds of the Japanese people and allow them to be open to another person’s culture or at least understand it. There are many misconceptions about Japan as there is about Trinidad and Tobago and I would like to bridge that gap in helping people become less ignorant of each other. I am also very excited about site seeing and immersing myself into the Japanese culture and everyday life.
I think this programme will benefit me career wise because it is my goal to become an ambassador and to teach Diplomacy for International Relations at the University level. I love relations among people and countries and would like to be a part of it. Trinidad and Tobago currently, does not have an Embassy, High Commission or Consulate in Japan and it would be my dream to make that mission happen and headline it. Living in Yawatahama-shi, will be perfect practice for diplomacy work by interacting with children in schools and the people of the community.
I am happy that I was chosen to be a part of the JET Family and look forward to this new journey and where it will take me. (^-^)
