Living in Tokyo gives you the chance to see both contemporary and traditional attractions. I started off my first few months in Japan by learning more about Inagi, my suburban placement city, which is famous for pear cultivation. I also spent time learning and visiting some of the 'must-go' spots in Tokyo.

Apart from experiencing Hatsumode (the first shrine or temple visit for the New Year), just after midnight on January 1st, one of my memorable experiences was participating in a Japanese craft class, where I learned how to put together and play a smaller version of the Shamisen, a traditional three stringed musical instrument.

I've been working with several English teachers at my school and assisting other international ALTs with activities for our English club. The school hosted a cultural week where students and teachers had the opportunity to learn about Trinidad and Tobago's culture and even participated in a limbo dance activity. I also had the opportunity to see how Japanese foods such Sukiyaki and Okonomiyaki are made since one of the English teachers prepared them for us.

What I've enjoyed the most about living in Tokyo are the everyday things such as fast and easy commuting, clean streets, safe walks around the city, warm vending machine lattes, 100-yen shops, café hopping and food markets. There will never be a shortage of entertainment or learning opportunities in one of the biggest metropolitan areas in the world.
