JET Programme Series: When Dreams Become Reality! - Safiyah Mohammed

My name is Safiyah Mohammed, a university graduate with a major in Sociology. Etc... Etc... Sounds a little boring, let me start over. Hi, I am Safiyah Mohammed, newly appointed Assistant English Language Teacher (ALT) on the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme. Life is really something, in 2019 I realised my true passion was teaching after I had the opportunity to provide Social Studies tutoring/lessons to students. The gratitude that I felt from being able to impart knowledge and seeing the success of my students was really humbling. Simultaneously, I also accomplished a goal in my five-year plan which was to become a Manager by the age of thirty.
I always say, everyone has a dream job and a realistic job, and my selection for the JET Programme was a dream come true. Why JET? Well first of all I have the opportunity to fulfil my passion for teaching. Besides this, I get to share Trinidad and Tobago’s diverse culture and learn about Japan’s rich culture which combines both tradition and modernity. I also get to continue with my hobby of learning different languages and experience all that there is to offer from one of the most exciting and innovative places in the world.
The city that I was placed in is called Ise City, of the Mie Prefecture. This city has everything I envisioned the JET Programme would have to offer. The Mie Prefecture is famous for its seafood, including Ise spiny lobster, abalone and oyster, the Mikimoto Pearl Island, the Suzuka International Racing Course, the Ama Divers and is the breeding area of Matsuzaka cattle, farmed for their high-class marbled wagyu beef. Ise City, in particular, is home to the most sacred Shinto Shrine in Japan, the Ise Grand Shrine, as well as the Wedded Rocks, Ise Shima National Park, Mt. Asama, Miya River and so much more.
Accepting the ALT Position on the JET Programme was definitely an easy decision. I am very grateful to my family and friends for being so supportive in my new journey and cannot wait to start this exciting chapter of my life.
