I want to start talking about the weather because that’s been a ride! Between having rainy season parts 1, 2 and 3, you would think that a born and bred Trini, living in daily 34 degree weather would have prepared me for a Japanese Summer.
Tell that to my daily NHK Heat Stroke warning notifications on my phone every morning!

It rel hot dawg, meen goh lie.
But, in true Trini fashion, d hot foot doh stop and d only ting rain does stop is cricket!

Life in Japan has been a plethora of events! I have found myself attending cultural and seasonal festivals, joining different groups and integrating myself into society.  There is always something to do!

I’ve explored Osaka and Nara, visited great temples and shrines and met some very polite deer. The culture shock was real! Did you know that in the Kanto region they keep to the left, but in the Kansai region they keep to the right. Who knew culture shock can happen in the same culture?!

I found a Caribbean community here and had some really good potato salad and jerk chicken. The Caribbean Community is larger than I ever thought and it is blissfully charming to see how Japanese people have embraced Caribbean culture here! I’ve made wonderful friends and lemme tell you, J’ouvert was a scene!

Yes! J’ouvert!
If you know, you know. If you don’t, then you missing out!

School life has been equally as exciting! Sports festivals, summer sessions, Global Festa and English Camp. There is never a dull moment in my career!
English Camp was a definite highlight of the season for me! I was tasked with creating an interactive and fun experience for the kids so, I chose to do a Murder Mystery Game!

Let me set the scene…

You are on a Caribbean Cruise, however, the owner of the ship was found dead! Can you figure out who dunnit?

This is
Death in Paradise!

Sharing my culture, my music, and my food with my students and co-workers has been a really emotional moment for me. To see how curious and excited they are to understand where I come from is very heartwarming.

These past months have encouraged me to introspect and understand more about myself than ever before and I know this is just the beginning. As Summer comes to an end and Autumn emerges, I am beyond excited to experience more of what Japan has to offer and with Autumn being my favourite season, I am sure that I’ll fall in love even more.

I end with these parting words…

Japanese Summer rel dread bai!
