JET Programme Series: Living the Dream - Safiyah Mohammed

Hello everyone! Six months have passed since I came to Japan, and I can happily say I’ve been living the dream. There are simply no words to describe how amazing my city of Ise is. It has kind people, beautiful views, deep-rooted culture, fantastic food, and much more. All that I envisioned for my Japan experience has been coming true, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. After my arrival, the Ise JET/ALT family kindly adopted and included me in all their activities. It’s incredible to have such a diverse group of people to work with and enjoy this experience.
I am currently teaching at an Elementary School and a Junior High School. Even though there is a language barrier, I have adjusted well and bonded with the students and teachers, forging great working relationships and creating many precious memories. I can teach about and share Trinidad and Tobago’s culture and festivals at my schools. Last December my students learnt about “A Trini Christmas” and this February it’s all about the greatest show on earth, Carnival. Besides teaching at my schools, I sometimes volunteer at another JET participant’s school, to assist with her English Seminars. I also volunteer every other Saturday at an event planned by the Sports Division of my Board of Education to play sports with elementary students while teaching them English.
As for me, I’ve been making proper use of the holidays and weekends. I have travelled to Nagoya and Osaka and ventured around some of the different cities in my Prefecture, Mie. Just recently, I went to Osaka Automesse, which is a car customization motor show. It’s also one of the biggest events in the Kansai Region and attracts more than 200,000 visitors annually. This show is a car lover’s dream. Also, I entered the #iloveIse_photocontest on Instagram and was selected as one of the top five first-place winners. It’s such an amazing feeling to have my hobby of photography appreciated. There is so much more that I have experienced and so much that I have yet to do. That’s all from me for now, so, until next time!
