Jet Programme Series: Ain’t That Rice - Arianne Solomon

Many impressions of Japan usually centre around Cherry Blossoms cascading on to lush lawns or peaceful Japanese gardens with that gorgeous shade of green. I love it!
There is another shade of green that stole my heart…Rice!
Akita Prefecture in Northern Tohoku on Honshu Island is known for its rice. I am now fully biased against all rice, fight me! We have the best sake as well.
I’ve had the privilege of planting rice with members of the Volunteer Club at my school, twice.
Thanks to a local farmer/businessman who organizes the event each year. He invites local schools to volunteer to help plant the rice seedlings by hand into a section of the rice paddies he owns.
The rice is planted in Spring harvested in Autumn of the same year. After which it is processed and donated to poorer countries.
I’m unable to join this year’s planting but I was happy to be a part of this endeavor.
Needless to say, it was quite the experience. Something about getting knee deep in mud and focusing on maintaining a straight line as you plunge your hands into the mud is extremely therapeutic. I couldn’t help but think the entire time, “Well, isn’t this rice!” 😊
