JET Programme Series: A Step into the Unknown - Tisha Alexander

みなさんこんにちは!!! It is with great excitement that I introduce myself. My name is Tisha Precious Alexander and I hail from Siparia aka The Sand City. I am 25 years of age and graduated from the University of Trinidad and Tobago with a Bachelor of Education degree specializing in Language and Literature. If I say I have always wanted to be a teacher I’d be lying but I have always had a passion towards education and sharing my knowledge. If you had spoken to me ten years ago I would've told you I’m on my way to becoming a lawyer but at the last moment something about teaching just called out to me and now here I am…on my way to Japan…to teach!
I won’t lie, it took prayers, tears, faith, trust and a little pixie dust to reach this stage but it was all worth it. The JET Programme had been my plan since 2019 and it was only in 2021 that I gained the confidence and applied for the 2022 cycle. I remember the pure joy I felt when I received the call last year that I was shortlisted for the interview. That joy was short-lived however when a few days after I found out I needed to have surgery on the day of the interview! I’m not one to question God but I questioned him heavily.
Why now? Why me? Why!? It didn’t help that everyone kept saying “That happened because you weren’t meant to go!” However, in the midst of my frustration I remember a thought coming to me clearly “The path is set, He is simply preparing you!” That one thought changed my outlook on the situation and I began preparing myself. I used my recovery period to study Japanese, research different prefectures, familiarize myself with their education system, customs, practices etc. and when the 2023 applications opened I WAS READY! Well I guess we all know how that went because here I am.
Many people continue to ask me “Why?” Why leave your job, family, friends and life as you know it? And my response is always “Why not?” I always tell my students that the world has a lot to offer if we’re brave enough to go out and seek it. How could I be a hypocrite and hide in the comfort of the known whilst encouraging my students to take a leap of faith into the unknown? So this is me, at 25, practicing what I preach and taking a leap of faith. I will set the path for the generations to come. Trinidad is home…will forever be home but there’s a lot to explore, experiences to be had and knowledge to be gained if we simply have the courage to pursue it.
