みんなさん、こんばんは。Hello, everyone! My name is Anisha Romany. I am a 28-year-old educator from Paramin Village, Maraval. An avid musician and language enthusiast, I pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree at St. Thomas University in Canada, graduating with Honours in Spanish and Fine Arts. I have been working towards building a career in education since obtaining my degree, and I have found immense joy in being a teacher. I love accompanying my students as they work towards achieving both their long and short-term goals.

I have always had a fond affection for and sincere interest in Japanese language and culture, but it was especially kindled during the 2020 Olympics and during my years at university through encounters with Japanese exchange students.  I began studying online and participated locally in the Japanese Language Speech Contest 2022, placing first in the Beginner category. I also participated in a cultural exchange event known as the JUNTOS Japan-Latin America Exchange Programme. I applied to the JET Programme in the hope that it would challenge both my newfound language skills and my developing talents as an educator. I am thrilled to have been offered a chance to participate in this incredible venture.

My new home over the next year will be Kahoku City, Ishikawa Prefecture. As I understand it, Kahoku is not unlike my native Paramin in its agricultural background and some hilly areas. It is also located on the West coast of Honshu (Japan’s largest island), which means no shortage of beaches. These will no doubt be of great comfort to me as a reminder of home while being literally on the other side of the world. I am committed to being an excellent ambassador for Trinidad and Tobago during my time in Japan, bringing the very best of myself and my country to the Japanese people; to my students, colleagues and everyone with whom I come into contact.

My goal is to become the best educator I can be. I believe that serving as an ALT on the JET Programme will help to shape me into that teacher. Upon my return to Trinidad and Tobago, I will continue to advocate for positive, meaningful relations between our two great nations, by encouraging others to engage in cultural and language exchange and by sharing my own experiences as a proud Trinbagonian.

I would like to thank the Ambassador and the staff at the Embassy of Japan for their support, as well as the Kahoku City Board of Education for affording me this wonderful opportunity to be of service. I am beyond grateful, and I cannot wait to begin. ご清聴いただき、ありがとうございました。
