Jet Programme Series: Memories for a Lifetime - Safiyah Mohammed

WAW, it’s been one year already? It feels like only yesterday I arrived in Japan. For the past year, I have learnt and enjoyed so much in Japan. Five years ago, I would have never envisioned myself living in Japan, teaching English, and immersing myself in their culture and language. I am so happy that I took this opportunity and embraced the challenge.
Thus far, I am thoroughly enjoying teaching English in Japan. The teachers, my students, and the people in my city are amazing. I continue to take every opportunity I get to share Trinidad and Tobago’s culture both at my schools and with the people of my city. I have been to a few potlucks and always shared a taste of Trinidad and Tobago through my dishes. Speaking of cooking and sharing culture, I was invited by the International Exchange Association in my city to lead a cooking class in October, where I will demonstrate and talk about Trinidad and Tobago’s dishes. The theme of the class will be called a “Trini Sunday Lunch.” I’m very excited and honored to be a part of this.
As for traveling and experiencing Japan, I have explored eight prefectures until now. Some of my most memorable moments are:
Wherever I go, I am treated with the utmost kindness and respect. I learnt so much from the local people in each prefecture, creating memories to last a lifetime. I can’t wait to see what comes next as I continue this fascinating journey in Japan.

- Tokyo: experiencing the Children’s Day celebrations at Sensoji Temple
- Tottori: seeing sand dunes, visiting the sand sculpture museum, and learning about samurai culture from the Edo Period at the Watanabe Museum
- Mie: enjoying beautiful displays of fireworks, Yukata Party
- Fukui: visiting the dinosaur museum, experiencing a restored 15th-century samurai village that belonged to the Asakura Clan, and visiting a shrine that was established in 717 AD and is now listed as a National Historic Site of Japan
- Ishikawa: visiting all the tea house districts and strolling through Kenroku-en Garden in Kanazawa
