Jet Programme Series: 6 Months in Japan with many more to follow - Terri-Ann Young
Can you believe it's been 6 months since I've been living in the land of the rising sun? The time has flown by so quickly that it's mind-boggling. However, my experience thus has been an adventure that's not short of exciting.
Since I arrived I've experienced 2 different seasons (spring and summer) and boy oh boy. Nothing prepares you to be slowly cooked and marinated during summer. However, that hasn't stopped me because 'outside nice.' I've found myself being involved in activities in and out of the school like bon dancing, the Gion festival, a magazine launch, a drumming (Taiko) festival, and even a steelpan festival.
Yes, I said steelpan. One of the things I love about Japan is that it's way more heterogeneous than I thought. I certainly didn't expect an entire festival celebrating my culture but I love the touch of home.
I love getting so excited when I heard about the event and telling every staff member in my school.
I also love the support system and safety that Kobe provides. Along with wonderful co-workers and students, this experience has been a dream. Of course with every up, there'll be downs but it's not enough to dampen my excitement as I navigate the honeymoon stage in Japan.
As this experience progresses I only hope that it gets better and that I continue to learn and grow. どうもありがとうございます
Finally, to anyone who's considering applying to teach in Japan, just put your best foot forward and go for it. がんばって (Ganbatte)
