JET Programme Series: Atarashii bōken no jikan desu! (It’s time for a new adventure!) - Nitya Gittens

Konnichiwa minasan! I'm Nitya Gittens, an adventurous creative from Petit Valley, Trinidad and Tobago. Since childhood, I've delved into countless realms through books, living vicariously through fictional characters from all walks of life. As I grew older, I discovered that travel offered a similarly immersive experience. Driven by a hunger to explore the world's geographical and cultural wonders, I've been able to witness magic in so many different places including cocoa farms in Costa Rica, coral reefs in Jamaica, circus festivals in France, and within the hallowed halls of the historic Howard University in Washington D.C.
My upcoming adventure: teaching English through the JET Programme in Japan! I'm thrilled for the opportunity to immerse myself in Japanese life firsthand! Whatever lies ahead, I'm certain this journey will be transformative and eye-opening, and so I am counting down the days to my new life in Japan with much anticipation.
I am especially pleased to have been placed within the Oita prefecture on Kyushu island. Oita is renowned for its hot spring towns, chicken tempura and citrus fruit production, while Kyushu on a whole boasts a relatively mild climate and surf worthy beaches. As surfing in Japan and enjoying hot springs at traditional Japanese inns are both high on my activity wish list, I could not be more delighted! My placement in Nakatsu City offers the best of both worlds: countryside serenity just an hour and a half from Fukuoka City, Kyushu's largest city. I can’t wait to become intimately acquainted with both the quiet beauty of rural Japan and the vibrant energy of Japanese city life.
I would like to thank God for blessing me with this opportunity and for His continuous guidance and protection. My family and partner have been unwavering in their support, and I am grateful for their encouragement. I would also like to extend my appreciation to the Japanese ambassador and the staff at the Japanese embassy for giving me the chance to fly the flag of Trinidad and Tobago high in Japan. I feel fortunate to be embarking on this journey along with the 2024 Trinbagonian cohort, which is filled with passionate professionals who embody our nation's warmth and vibrancy. I thank them for their camaraderie and support, which has made the experience thus far lively and exciting. As our departure date looms ahead, I look forward to this once in a lifetime opportunity to be an ambassador for Trinidad and Tobago while exploring the bounty of the Land of the Rising Sun.
