You never know what you are capable of if you never try. This is what I had to learn and accept—that unpredictability may be scary, but it may just unlock the very doors you need.

Hi, I am Jordhan Scott, a 24-year-old Trini from Arima, about to embark on a transformative journey. I always believed that one had to be exceptionally fortunate to be chosen for such an experience. However, with the JET programme, all I needed was a dream I truly believed in. From the age of 17, I knew I wanted to apply for the JET programme; my peers even dubbed me "the girl with the plan." I was determined from a young age to reach Japan and tailored my academic path accordingly.

While pursuing a degree in International Relations at the University of the West Indies, I seized the opportunity to study Japanese at the Center of Language Learning and quickly developed a passion for the language. After graduating, I grappled with a two-year internal debate about my qualifications and the likelihood of being selected. During that time, I worked as a preschool teacher, gained experience, and built my confidence in a classroom setting. I also had the opportunity to teach kids who spoke Spanish and understood very little English, creating tailored lessons to bridge the language gap, which led me back to the JET programme. Despite my doubts, I decided to take a leap of faith and submitted my application, not knowing it would be successful. You can just imagine my surprise at the acceptance.

So, here I am, preparing and packing for a journey I had literal dreams about. I am heading to Fukuyama City! Despite this city not being my top pick for placement, I feel like Fukuyama is just the city for me. Known as the “Town of Roses,” Fukuyama reflects the slice-of-life scenery I adore in all my animes and gives me a reason to finally learn to ride a bicycle.

As I think about my upcoming role as an ALT, I feel a strong sense of anticipation, knowing this journey will be truly special. Although I have experience teaching English, I expect the classroom in Japan to be a unique environment, full of different challenges and surprises. This job is much more than just work; it’s a deep cultural exchange, a blend of learning from both worlds.
I am excited to dive into this experience, to learn from each lesson and interaction. The idea of immersing myself in Japan’s educational setting, with its unique traditions, fills me with both excitement and respect. I know that each day will bring new insights, shaping my understanding and broadening my perspective. This role offers not only professional growth but also personal transformation. I am ready to embrace every moment, knowing that the knowledge and experiences I gain will be invaluable for my future endeavors.
