Who Can Apply for a Visa at our Embassy

Jurisdiction
Visa applications should be made at an embassy or consulate with jurisdiction over the applicant’s place of current/permanent residence. You may apply at the Embassy of Japan in Trinidad and Tobago if you live, work or are currently residing within the area to which this Embassy is accredited.The Embassy of Japan in Trinidad and Tobago is accredited to:
- Trinidad and Tobago
- Grenada
- St. Lucia
- St. Vincent and the Grenadines
- Suriname
- Guyana
If you reside and/or are a citizen of another country in the Caribbean not mentioned in this list, please contact the relevant Embassy or Consulate of Japan.

Overseas Applicants (including Tobago)
Overseas applicants are those who reside in countries accredited to the Embassy of Japan in Trinidad and Tobago (including those residing in Tobago).Overseas applicants must submit scanned copies of all documents (including their passport biodata page) required by Types of Visas to the Consular Section at the Embassy via email to complete the pre-check process.
Overseas applicants are eligible for same-day processing.
Please try to submit all documents at least one month before the intended date of travel to Japan. Applicants must travel and be physically present at the Embassy of Japan in Trinidad and Tobago during their appointment. Depending on the type of visa, a proxy with a valid authorization letter may be able to submit the application on behalf of the applicant.

Visa Exemptions
- Suriname Passport holders do not require a Japanese visa if the purpose of visit is tourism, commerce, a conference, visit to relatives/acquaintances etc., with the length of stay not exceeding 3 months.
- Those transiting through Japan may not need a visa to do so. To confirm whether you are exempt from a transit visa, please visit the Transit Visa section under Types of Visas.
- Certain travelers passing through Japan on a cruise may not require a visa depending on their port of embarkation onto the cruise, their final disembarkation port before flight travel and their period of stay in Japan for sightseeing purposes while on the cruise. Please refer to the Cruise Travelers section.

Criteria for Visa Issuance
In principle, a Japanese visa will be issued to an applicant when they meet all of the following requirements and the issuance is regarded as reasonable:- The applicant possesses a valid passport and is entitled for re-entry into the country of which he or she is a national, citizen or resident.
- All submitted documentation is authentic, completed and satisfactory.
- The activities to be engaged in while in Japan, the civil status or position of the applicant, and the length of stay meet the requirements for the status of residence and the period of stay stipulated in the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act (Cabinet * Order No.319 of 1951), hereinafter referred to as “the Act”.
- The applicant shall not fall under any of the items of Article 5, Paragraph 1 of the Act.
However, for some visa categories, or in certain cases where additional information is required, the processing time will be longer.
